Herringbone Tile Pattern – Q&A With Charlotte Tile Installer

What Is Herringbone Tile Pattern?

The herringbone tile pattern is a popular variation of traditional subway tile. The herringbone pattern resembles the shape of a fish bone. Instead of laying tiles in a straight line, rectangular tiles are placed either parallel to the boundary for Traditional Herringbone pattern or rotated at a 45 degree angle for Stacked Herringbone pattern.

Other variations include:

  1. Herringbone Inserted, where a square tile sits at the 90 degree angle where the two rectangular tiles meet,
  2. Herringbone Blocks, where a square tile sits under the herringbone design,
  3. Herringbone Duet, where two different sized rectangular tiles form the herringbone pattern, and
  4. Herringbone Shadow, where slightly wider and slightly thinner rectangular tiles form the herringbone pattern.

Tile Sizes For Herringbone Pattern

Herringbone pattern uses rectangular tiles with block edge length ratios that are usually 2:1 and sometimes 3:1. Popular sizes include 2×6 or 3×6 for backsplashes or walkways. Large format herringbone tiles used for walls and floors are 6:1 or 4:1 ratios, such as 6×36 or 9×36. Many other sizes are used, such as 2×8, 4×24, 6×24, 10×20, 12×24, 6×36, 9×36, 18×36, 12×48, and 24×48.

Chevron Versus Herringbone Tile Pattern

Chevron, also known as French Herringbone, is often confused with the Herringbone pattern because the two patterns form a zig-zag design. With the Chevron pattern, the tiles are cut at an angle and fitted together to form a “V”. With the Herringbone pattern, the tiles are not cut and fitted together at 90 degree angles. The Chevron pattern forms a continuous zig-zag, whereas the Herringbone pattern creates a staggered, or broken, zig-zag.
